Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is about as close to the original definition of "cocktail" as it gets — an 1806 newspaper described a cocktail as spirit, sugar, water, and bitters, which is essentially this drink. The name itself came later, coined at Louisville's Pendennis Club when patrons started asking bartenders to make their whiskey drink "the old-fashioned way," before fancier ingredients became trendy.
