The Waysider Ingredients

5-10 Fresh mint leaves

2 oz / 60 ml Jack Daniel's Old No. 7

0.5 oz / 15 ml Simple syrup

0.5 oz / 15 ml Fresh lime juice

Top with ginger beer (about 2-3 oz / 60-90 ml)

Mint bouquet and a lime wheel, for garnish

How to make The Waysider

Add the mint to your shaker (save the prettiest tops for garnish), then the Jack Daniel's, simple syrup, and lime juice. Shake gently with pebble ice — overdo it and the mint turns vegetal. Open pour into a tall glass with room to spare, top with ginger beer, and garnish with a mint bouquet and a lime wheel.

I grabbed the Waysider's base recipe from Difford's Guide and tweaked it with a little extra whiskey. My tasting verdict says it all: it's like the mule and the mojito had a child, and it's delicious. Lighter than a straight Jack and ginger thanks to the citrus, with mint bringing a fresh, almost tropical energy. One tip: use ginger beer, not ginger ale — ginger beer's fermented bite is what makes the drink. I used Kroger's, which is a surprisingly close second to Cock and Bull for spice.
