Blood Bag Margarita Ingredients
2 oz / 60 ml Tequila (I used Espolon blanco tequila)
1 oz / 30 ml Lime juice
.5 oz / 15 ml Agave nectar
.5 oz / 15 ml Cointreau
3 oz / 90 ml Blood orange juice
How to make a Blood Bag Margarita
Stick the blood type label on the pouch before you fill it. Add the tequila, lime juice, agave nectar, Cointreau and blood orange juice to a shaker with ice. Shake until cold. Open the pouch and strain the drink straight in. Add pebble ice if you want it. Seal the pouch and add a straw.
This is the blood orange margarita from the blood bag video. It's my usual margarita spec with 3 oz of blood orange juice on top. The juice does the color, so there's no dye in it, and it stretches the drink into something closer to a punch. That's on purpose. The bag holds 16 oz, and not everyone at a party wants a small, booze-forward cocktail.
It's still a daisy, with the Cointreau doing part of the sweetening, so it drinks like a lighter margarita and not like juice with tequila in it. Blood oranges are a little more tart than regular oranges, which helps.
Where do you find blood orange juice in October?
Here in the US, blood oranges don't usually come into season until November, which is a little late for Halloween. I buy bottled blood orange juice at a local grocery store. The same store sells blood oranges imported from Australia. Australian ones are what I used for the spicy blood orange margarita.
About the blood bags
They're adult drink pouches and they hold 16 oz. The kit comes with straws and a funnel, but the bags open wide enough that you don't need the funnel. They seal well, and they stand up on their own. Some blood bags are made to hang instead, so check before you buy.
One thing that's changed since the video: the pouches used to come with blood type labels, and now the labels are sold separately, so grab both. The upside is that the labels are just stickers. Leave them off and the pouches work the rest of the year.
Can you put ice in a blood bag?
Yes. Pebble ice fits right through the opening. Regular cubes are harder to get in, but you could do it. The drink is 7 oz before ice, so there's plenty of room. It might not look quite as cool with ice in it. It looked fine to me.
Making these for a party
Put the filled bags in an ice bucket and let people grab one. For a bigger party, batch the drink in a pitcher and fill the bags as you go.
