Root Beer Rye Old Fashioned

This root beer rye old fashioned follows the classic template of whiskey, sugar, and bitters, with the sugar swapped for a barspoon of root beer syrup. Old Forester Rye is a great fit here. It is 100 proof with a 65% rye mashbill, and at around $25 a bottle it is one of the better values in rye. The root beer and the rye both bring a spicy little kick, the syrup adds a touch of vanilla, and Old Forester's Bohemian bitters layer in spiced cherry and chocolate notes. This is one of our favorite drinks on the channel. In the video we finished it with cherry cola cherries from Old Forge Distillery.

A heads up on the syrup: the A&W Root Beer Dessert Topper has been discontinued. You can substitute another root beer syrup, or try our newer root beer old fashioned, which skips the syrup entirely and gets its root beer flavor from Rebel Root Beer Whiskey and cherry vanilla bitters.
