Coffee Negroni with Mr Black Coffee Liqueur Recipe
Coffee Negroni with Mr Black Coffee Liqueur Ingredients
1 oz / 30 ml gin (I used Beefeater)
0.75 oz / 22 ml Campari
1 oz / 30 ml Mr Black cold brew coffee liqueur
0.5 oz / 15 ml sweet vermouth (I used Dolin Rouge)
Orange peel, for garnish
How to make a Coffee Negroni with Mr Black Coffee Liqueur
Add the gin, Campari, Mr. Black, and sweet vermouth to a mixing glass with ice and stir until cold, about 20 seconds. Strain over a large ice sphere in a rocks glass. Express the oils of an orange peel over the drink and drop the peel in.

A Negroni is equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth. This riff keeps the gin and the Campari and hands most of the vermouth's job to coffee.
Mr Black is a cold brew coffee liqueur from Australia, made since 2013 with about half the sugar of the old-school coffee liqueurs, so it brings coffee bitterness rather than syrup. That is what makes it work here. Campari is bitter, coffee is bitter, and neither one has to fight through sugar to be heard. The half ounce of sweet vermouth that is left rounds the edges, and the orange peel stays, because orange and coffee have been getting along since the first café.
I made this one for Negroni Week in 2022, and it is still the riff I reach for when I want a Negroni after dinner instead of before.
Can I use Kahlúa instead of Mr Black?
You can, but Kahlúa is much sweeter. Drop the sweet vermouth to a bar spoon or leave it out, and expect a dessert-leaning drink.
Is there espresso in a Coffee Negroni?
No. All the coffee comes from the liqueur, so there is nothing to brew and nothing to shake.
Up or over ice?
Over one big piece of ice. The drink is all spirit, and a large cube keeps it cold without watering it down before you finish.
